Challenge
The Boardwalk at Ira Needles Blvd. is an urban shopping centre featuring retail, restaurants, office space, a medical clinic and theatre. The developer's goal was to add a central amenity that would fit the Boardwalk's modern design aesthetic while creating a welcoming village-like environment for people to gather, relax and connect.Â
SolutionÂ
Working in collaboration, design firm A. Baldassarra Architects, installer Yard Weasel Inc. and playground specialists Openspace Solutions introduced a central splash pad leisure space. At its heart, a ring of giant Morning Grasses from the Grasslands Collection by Waterplay provoke playful exploration while amplifying the soothing effects of the surrounding green space. Spherical Solis sprays accent the circular pad motif while strategically placed seating and shade structures give parents clear views from all angles. Wide access paths support an easy flow of traffic to and from the play space, putting an emphasis on inclusion for all ages and abilities.
Impact
The "splash circle" succeeds in creating a stunning social hub at the heart of the Boardwalk. It caters to the diverse needs of visitors—offering a peaceful pause during the work day, a cool space to rest in between errands, and turns shopping trips into treasured family experiences.Â
