Let's Get Technical

Date: November 6, 2024 at 11 AM PST / 2 PM EST

Recording Available Here

Your Host: Jeff Scobie, Design and Specification Technical Specialist

Now that we have learned the basics of designing a splash pad project, we will dive deeper into the technical details of how splash pads operate and the mechanical needs for proper maintenance. Understanding gallons/liters per minute, sequencing, and piping are all crucial for ensuring efficient water flow and conservation and can be used creatively to create dynamic play experiences while managing pressure and flow. Additionally, we will discuss recirculating systems to maintain water quality and safety, by ensuring the water chemistry is correct to keep the water free from harmful bacteria. Knowledge of all these technical details will improve our design skills by knowing how to design for constructability and creating buildable designs that are practical and efficient to implement.

Fun for All, Inclusive and Risky Play

We know that risky play helps to increase self-esteem, decrease conflict sensitivity, and help with problem-solving skills but what does risky play look like in an inclusive splash pad?  How can we incorporate risky and inclusive play into these spaces and keep children safe? By applying the 7 Principles of Universal Design, we can move beyond ADA accessibility to create a truly barrier-free and inclusive environment. Integrating play theory and fun design elements can transform spaces into areas where children can set their boundaries and pick their adventures. Our approach encourages participation by incorporating both visual and verbal learning methods designed to stimulate critical thinking and foster safe play. The objective is to develop a genuine 'sense of space' where all kids can experience joy and fun.
